 Case study: Tabernacle (Performative worship space that appear in Bible and Torah)

(the moveable worship space for israel during the 40 years that they wandering around in desert.)

 



The jewish text contain very little information about synagogue architecture requirement. But for the tabernacle, the portable structure that use by moses and jew when they wanderling around in desert, considerd the earliest shelter made for worshipping the god. The dimension of the tabernacle and each artefacts is very fixas well as the material and the color of it. which every thing was written in the Torah. And also the way how people interact with is very fix as well.

 

How to transport the tabernacle.



The Levites are the only group who incharge

"For the LORD had said to Moses, 'Exempt the tribe of Levi from the census; do not include them when you count the rest of the Israelites. You must put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and its equipment as you travel, and they must care for it and camp around it. Whenever the Tabernacle is moved, the Levites will take it down and set it up again. Anyone else who goes too near the Tabernacle will be executed.'" (Numbers 1:48-51 NLT),



Each of them responsible for the specific part of the tabernacle.

6 And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites.

7 Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:

8 And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

9 But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders.





When the construct finish, the tabernacle will be the cloud on top of the tabernacle tent, which mean the lord already dwell among them. and they will use th ecloud to indicate how and where do they move.

Exodus 40:34-35 - "Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle."

Exodus 40:36-37 - "And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys: But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up."
